My AI Policy

Hello!

I posted a video on Vlogbrothers about this if you want to watch but one thing that has emerged from the conversation about me not feeling great about how much I had integrated LLMs into my process is that it might be a good idea for creators to have an AI-use policy. It's definitely a good idea for me.

My overwhelming concern here is that the things I make are accurate and that people can trust both in that accuracy and that the perspectives you're seeing will forever remain mine. If we don't have those things...what do we have?

Complexly (the non-profit that makes Crash Course and SciShow and a bunch of other YouTube shows) has had a public AI policy for over three years now, so I should have known this was a good idea.

In that spirit, I have created one for myself.

I've kept it pretty simple:

  1. No portion of any script will be written, edited, or outlined by an LLM.
  2. The thesis of a video will always originate with a human.
  3. No image or music in a video will be generated by AI. If something is accidentally included, best efforts will be made to remove it.
  4. LLM outputs are not trusted as a source.

And this is more of a general policy but:

  1. Informational / educational videos will contain links to primary sources in the description.
